   3 The Tahoe-LAFS team is pleased to announce the immediate
   4 availability of version 1.8.0β of Tahoe-LAFS, an extremely
   5 reliable distributed storage system.

   7 Tahoe-LAFS is the first distributed storage system which
   8 offers "provider-independent security"—meaning that not even
   9 the operators of your storage servers can read or alter your
  10 data without your consent. Here is the one-page explanation of
  11 its unique security and fault-tolerance properties:

  16 released July 18, 2010 [1].

  18 v1.8.0β is the beta release of major new improvements, including fast
  19 and fault-tolerant downloads and better Windows support. See the NEWS
  20 file [2] for details. If no regressions or critical bugs are
  21 discovered in this 1.8.0β version then we will release a functionally
  22 identical 1.8.0 final version on approximately August 15, 2010.

  25 WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

  27 With Tahoe-LAFS, you distribute your filesystem across
  28 multiple servers, and even if some of the servers are
  29 compromised by by an attacker, the entire filesystem continues
  30 to work correctly, and continues to preserve your privacy and
  31 security. You can easily share specific files and directories
  32 with other people.

  34 In addition to the core storage system itself, volunteers have
  35 built other projects on top of Tahoe-LAFS and have integrated
  36 Tahoe-LAFS with existing systems.

  38 These include frontends for Windows, Macintosh, JavaScript,
  39 iPhone, and Android, and plugins for Hadoop, bzr, mercurial,
  40 duplicity, TiddlyWiki, and more. See the Related Projects page

  44 Software, erasure coding, and principled engineering practices
  45 make Tahoe-LAFS safer than RAID, removable drive, tape,
  46 on-line backup or "cloud storage" systems.

  49 there are no known bugs or security flaws which would
  50 compromise confidentiality or data integrity under recommended

  58 Tahoe-LAFS. Clients from this release can write files and
  59 directories in the format used by clients of all versions back
  60 to v1.0 (which was released March 25, 2008). Clients from this

  62 all versions since v1.0. Servers from this release can serve
  63 clients of all versions back to v1.0 and clients from this
  64 release can use servers of all versions back to v1.0.

  67 series of Tahoe-LAFS will be actively supported and maintained
  68 for the forseeable future, and future versions of Tahoe-LAFS
