   4 version 1.6 of Tahoe-LAFS, an extremely reliable distributed
   5 data store.

   8 "provider-independent security" -- meaning that not even your
   9 cloud service provider can read or alter your data without your
  10 consent.  Here is the one-page explanation of its unique

  15 Tahoe-LAFS v1.6.0 is the successor to v1.5.0, which was
  16 released August 1, 2009 [1]. This release includes major
  17 performance improvements, usability improvements, and one major
  18 new feature: deep-immutable directories (cryptographically
  19 unalterable permanent snapshots). See the NEWS file [2] for
  20 details.

  23 WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

  25 With Tahoe-LAFS, you spread your filesystem across multiple
  26 servers, and even if some of the servers fail or are taken over
  27 by an attacker, the entire filesystem continues to work
  28 correctly, and continues to preserve your privacy and
  29 security. You can easily and securely share chosen files and
  30 directories with others.

  32 In addition to the core storage system itself, volunteers have
  33 developed related projects to integrate it with other
  34 tools. These include frontends for Windows, Macintosh,
  35 JavaScript, and iPhone, and plugins for Hadoop, bzr, duplicity,
  36 TiddlyWiki, and more. As of this release, contributors have
  37 added an Android frontend and a working read-only FUSE

  40 We believe that the combination of erasure coding, strong
  41 encryption, Free/Open Source Software and careful engineering
  42 make Tahoe-LAFS safer than RAID, removable drive, tape, on-line
  43 backup or other Cloud storage systems.

  46 are no known bugs or security flaws which would compromise
  47 confidentiality or data integrity under normal use. (For all

  54 This release is fully compatible with the version 1 series of
  55 Tahoe-LAFS. Clients from this release can write files and
  56 directories in the format used by clients of all versions back
  57 to v1.0 (which was released March 25, 2008). Clients from this
  58 release can read files and directories produced by clients of
  59 all versions since v1.0. Servers from this release can serve
  60 clients of all versions back to v1.0 and clients from this
  61 release can use servers of all versions back to v1.0.

  63 This is the seventh release in the version 1 series. The
  64 version 1 series of Tahoe-LAFS will be actively supported and
  65 maintained for the forseeable future, and future versions of
  66 Tahoe-LAFS will retain the ability to read and write files
  67 compatible with Tahoe-LAFS v1.

  69 In addition, version 1.6 improves forward-compatibility with
  70 planned future directory formats, allowing updates to a
  71 directory containing both current and future links, without
  72 loss of information.

 115 services. Allmydata founded the Tahoe-LAFS project and
