   4 availability of version 1.7.1 of Tahoe-LAFS, an extremely
   5 reliable distributed storage system.

   8 offers "provider-independent security"—meaning that not even
   9 the operators of your storage servers can read or alter your

  19 and improvements in security, forward-compatibility,

  24 WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

  26 With Tahoe-LAFS, you distribute your filesystem across
  27 multiple servers, and even if some of the servers are
  28 compromised by by an attacker, the entire filesystem continues
  29 to work correctly, and continues to preserve your privacy and
  30 security. You can easily share specific files and directories
  31 with other people.

  33 In addition to the core storage system itself, volunteers have
  34 built other projects on top of Tahoe-LAFS and have integrated
  35 Tahoe-LAFS with existing systems.

  37 These include frontends for Windows, Macintosh, JavaScript,
  38 iPhone, and Android, and plugins for Hadoop, bzr, mercurial,

  43 Software, erasure coding, and principled engineering practices
  44 make Tahoe-LAFS safer than RAID, removable drive, tape,
  45 on-line backup or "cloud storage" systems.

  48 there are no known bugs or security flaws which would
  49 compromise confidentiality or data integrity under recommended

  57 Tahoe-LAFS. Clients from this release can write files and
  58 directories in the format used by clients of all versions back

  61 all versions since v1.0. Servers from this release can serve
  62 clients of all versions back to v1.0 and clients from this
  63 release can use servers of all versions back to v1.0.

  66 of Tahoe-LAFS will be actively supported and maintained for
  67 the forseeable future, and future versions of Tahoe-LAFS will
  68 retain the ability to read and write files compatible with
